Our Top Anti-Ageing Skincare Tips
The cosmetics sections of most department stores or even most drugstores have a dizzying array of options, and the marketing and packaging can seduce even the most logical of scientific-minded people.
So without further ado, let us share our top 10 holistic anti-ageing secrets that truly work wonders.
1. Oil Cleansing
Oil cleansing might sound like a cardinal sin to those who believe oil-free is the way to go for a sensible skin care regimen. However, if you have oily skin and you strip your skin of oils using an alcohol cleanser, then you're skin reacts by producing more oil to make up for that oil lost. This oily feedback can go into a vicious cycle.
Remember, there's a big difference between applying a cosmetically formulated cleansing oil versus rubbing canola from your kitchen onto your skin
Oil cleansers are growing in popularity - they can clean oily skin without making it more oily. I was surprised that me skin became less oily when I went from an alcohol-based cleanser to an oil based cleanser.
2. Exfoliate your skin
Exfoliate your skin twice or three times a week with normal skin (or once a week with sensitive skin). As we get older, our cellular turnover takes longer and longer to happen so you have a layer of dead skin - regular exfoliation encourages your skin to turnover more quickly.
For physical exfoliation, we recommend our Ultrasonic Skin Scrubber.
3. Use Sunscreen
Use sunscreen day-in-day-out. Sunscreen is the main building block of a skincare regime - make sure you use sunscreen everyday and apply it liberally every few hours as most people don't wear enough sunscreen.
4. Use Vitamin C Daily
Vitamin C is an anti-aging superstar. Here are 3 reasons as to why you should use Vitamin C:
1. Vitamin C has been shown to increase collagen production while preventing wrinkles
2. Vitamin C helps reduce acne scars and sun spots
3. Vitamin C protects your skin against free radical damage (UV rays, pollution and natural ageing)
If you use retinol, use Vitamin C in the morning and the retinoid at night. Do not use them at the same time.
5. Use A Retinol-Based Cream
Retinol is basically the only product proven to reduce wrinkles and ageing. It can take a few months for results to truly show so don't give up on retinol if you don't see results straight away.Retinoids work by prompting surface skin cells to turn over and die rapidly, making way for new cell growth underneath. They hamper the breakdown of collagen and thicken the deeper layer of skin where wrinkles get their star
There are so many luxury creams at department stores that sell for hundreds and hundreds of dollars whereas Retinol (a derivative of Vitamin A) can be purchased at an affordable price via (a) prescription from the doctor or (b) you can buy it Over-the-counter from your local pharmacy from an array of brands (non-prescription retinol)
The Ordinary has a great affordable Retinol that many people use in their daily regime. This is a great gateway retinoid that you can start before seeing your doctor to discuss a retinol prescription. Remember, makers of the over-the-counter creams and gels don't have to say how much retinol their products contain plus they do not have to go through the testing and strict rules that prescription retinol has to go through.
6. LED Light Therapy
Do you feel like you've tried all the cosmetics and creams on the market and still looking for that perfect solution? This is where LED Light Therapy comes in!
Red light therapy is predominately used for its anti-ageing benefits because of its ability to stimulate collagen and elastin production which is responsible for skin elasticity and firmness.
For LED Light Therapy, we recommend our LED Light Face Mask.
7. Practice Mindfulness
Research has shown that constantly being stressed certainly doesn’t help your anti-aging as stress contributes to inflammation, oxidative stress and DNA damage - all of which are not good for the tissues in the skin - this leading to more wrinkles and fine lines.
Exercise, meditate, surround yourself with supportive people, and indulge with at-home spa treatments.
8. Look after the skin on your body
Finding the perfect skin care routine for your face is a major feat, but it isn’t the only routine you should be searching for. While we can certainly understand why you would make your face a priority—since everyone sees it—body care is a must, too.
If you are going to slather on a body lotion it has to do a lot more than smell nice, feel oily or work temporarily - it has to show real results with active ingredients.
For creepy skin, use Glycolic Body Cream (10% Glycolic Acid) - this has amazing results for crepey skin. It moisturizes and exfoliates skin beautifully.
Also, for creepy skin and anti-ageing, use body creams creams that contain retinol can help restore the skin's elasticity and thicken collagen, which might reduce the chance of developing crepey skin.
Also, on top of using great body creams, wear long-sleeve shirts and long pants when you're in the sun.
9. Get your beauty sleep.
When you're tired you tend to get stressed easily and crave junk food – both of which are notorious agers.
Repeatedly having a poor night's sleep can make us look older than we are.
Inadequate sleep is correlated with reduced skin health and accelerates skin ageing. Sleep deprived women show signs of premature skin ageing and a decrease in their skin's ability to recover after sun exposure
10. Facial Massage
Facial massge has been shown to be useful in slowing down the process of ageing. Unlike massage, creams cannot impact subcutaneous fat tissues and facial expression muscles.
For anti-ageing facial massage, we recommend our Electronic Face Massager
