Guide to LED Light Therapy

If you've been researching beauty treatments online lately, it's possible you've seen ads for LED (light-emitting diode) masks in your social media feeds with celebrities like Chrissy Teigen, Shay Mitchell, Katy Perry, Madonna, Kim Kardashian, and Jessica Alba.
LED light therapy is a safe and effective, pain-free and non-ablative technique to improve many skin concerns.
The basic difference between ablative and non-ablative treatments is that ablative lasers remove the top layer of skin, while non-ablative lasers, like the LED Light Mask work by heating up the underlying skin tissue (without harming the surface) so that your body will produce new collagen.
The benefits of LED light therapy are manifold. Clinically it is used to address issues which include acne, wound healing, actinic keratosis (rough scaly patches from sun exposure), precancerous tissue, psoriasis (a chronic autoimmune condition characterised by scaly patches) and skin rejuvenation.

LED Lights were first used by NASA
NASA first began studying the capabilities of LED lights back in the 1980s. Initially using them to speed up the plant growing process, they eventually discovered that red lights helped heal the wounds of astronauts in outer space by encouraging the collagen production process.

RED LIGHT - anti-ageing
Red light therapy has a wavelength of between 620nm to 700nm.
Red light therapy is predominately used for its anti-ageing benefits because of its ability to stimulate collagen and elastin production.
Red LED light therapy has been shown to be efficient in the deposition of collagen in the dermis (which is beneath the epidermis/top layer on skin).Experts believe that red LED light acts on cells in the skin known as fibroblasts, which play a role in production of collagen, a protein that makes up a large part of connective tissue and helps the skin to recover when it's harmed. So, in theory, red light could help to reverse some of the signs related to photoaging in the skin.
Red LED light therapy accelerates healing post laser ablative resurfacing is still the most effective method for the rejuvenation of severely photo-aged skin.
BLUE LIGHT - anti-acne
Blue light therapy has a wavelength of between 405nm to 420nm.
This is a powerful antibacterial properties for the treatment of acne without irritation, reduces oil production, prevents future breakout and offers a UV-free alternative for the treatment of eczema and psoriasis.
AMBER LIGHT - treats rosacea
Amber light therapy has a wavelength of between 570nm to 620nm.
Amber light therapy is effective in the treatment of skin issues involving redness such as rosacea. It is ideal for sensitive skin because of its calming and soothing. Amber light therapy helps to flush waste from the skin, boost lymphatic flow and increase cellular growth.
LED Light therapy is safe and painless!
LED light therapy is completely non-invasive and does not hurt. All you'll feel is a tiny bit of warmth. Light Therapy doesn't use UV light so there's no risk of tanning whatsoever.
Light therapy is good for all skin types, literally everyone, and incredible for rosacea.
If you are looking to treat a mole or sun spot using LED light therapy, always confirm the diagnosis first with a doctor. It could be a dangerous cancer.
LED light therapy doesn’t cause burns compared to other anti-aging treatments such as chemical peels, dermabrasion, and laser therapy.
You can save money by doing it at home
In-salon treatments are recommended two to three times a week for a course of four to six weeks. The cost is either built into the price of the facial (around $100), or you can have it as a standalone treatment for around $60-$80.
Our piece of advice
Although LED Light Therapy is an amazing treatment - it is imperative that you have your daily anti-ageing basics downpat. These anti-ageing basics include wearing sunscreen daily, using powerful serums (Vitamin A and Vitamin C) and moisturiser.

The effects of using an LED mask are cumulative - the more you use it, the better the results. LED light therapy is one of those technologies that you're going to have to it for about at least for a month. You'll just start getting compliments on your skin.
Thirty minutes maximum is recommended for treatment and no more than two times per week. We recommend using at least once a week - twice a week, if you have the time.
